Our journey didn’t begin online.
It started in Harlem, with a small booth inside Mart 125, and eventually grew into two retail stores. Like many entrepreneurs, we didn’t have everything figured out, we just started.
And that decision to start, even without clarity, shaped everything that came after.
-We made a lot of mistakes.
-Learned through experience.
-We adjusted in real time.
From working within Harlem’s streetwear culture alongside emerging designers, to navigating the realities of running a physical store, we were immersed in business without fully understanding the mechanics behind it.
What we lacked—at the time—was marketing and positioning.
And without those, even the most creative and culturally connected businesses struggle to survive.
After relocating to Atlanta, we opened another store. This time focused on beauty and wellness.
With a background in aromatherapy, we stepped into a growing industry. But despite having quality products and a strong concept, we faced a new challenge:
We weren’t clearly understood.
We sold lingerie at the time and customers saw us as a lingerie store, not a beauty and wellness brand. Our messaging was unclear, and our location didn’t support our vision.
Eventually, we closed our doors.
But that wasn’t the end, it was a redirection.
Our next step changed everything.
After discovering what was possible in the digital world, we shifted our focus online. This introduced an entirely new set of challenges—technology, systems, and most importantly, marketing.
We divided our roles with intention:
My husband focused on business structure.
I focused on product development and formulation.
And once again, we learned by doing.
Over time, we found our footing in the skincare space, particularly serving women with melanin-rich skin. We didn’t get everything right in the beginning, but each experience sharpened our understanding of what it truly takes to build a sustainable beauty brand.
Beauty Business Blueprint was born from everything we wish we understood earlier.
